What is GetYourRefund and how does it work?

GetYourRefund was created to help people file their taxes for free. We build our tools in partnership with the IRS, community tax preparers, and state tax agencies.

We currently offer two options: File with Help (Virtual VITA) and File Myself (DIY).

No matter which option you choose, you’ll have access to our support team along the way.

Option 1: File with Help (Virtual VITA)

With this option, you will:

- Answer a series of questions
- Upload your ID and tax documents
- Connect with a tax team who will prepare your return
- Review your return with the team before e-signing and filing

You’ll work with an IRS-certified tax team from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
They will prepare and file your return and make sure you claim all the benefits you’re eligible for.

Your tax team will need to contact you during the process and will review your return with you before it’s filed.
The process can take two to three weeks to complete.

File with Help is a good option if you:

- Need to file multiple tax years
- Had a major life change, like having a child or changing jobs
- Haven’t filed taxes before and would like extra support
- Don’t have access to a computer

Option 2: File Myself (DIY)

With this option, you’ll be connected to one of our free filing partners through a referral link.

You’ll prepare your own tax return using IRS-approved free filing software, available to people earning less than $89,000.

Many people start and finish the same day, but you can take as much time as you need.
If you need help, you can reach out to our support team at any time.

File Myself is a good option if you:

- Have filed taxes before and only need to file the current year
- Have had the same or similar jobs in recent years, or receive W-2 forms from your employer
- Need to file a 1040-NR (nonresident) tax return
- Have access to a computer
